Founded in 1867 as a technicum for mechanical engineers. Very rapid growth in student numbers. One of the first German universities to introduce electrical engineering (1892) and media studies (100 years later). The private status was changed to state in 1935 and it became a university in 1969. From the outset, the modern campus was characterised by intense building activity. After German reunification, the university was restructured as a university of applied sciences. Natural sciences, economics, media and social work were added to the range of courses. Internationality has always been a central theme, with a wide range of partners and projects.
