On May 28 and 29, 2026, the annual meeting of the German-Kazakh University (DKU) Consortium was held at the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz. Mittweida University of Applied Sciences was represented by Prof. Dr. Serge Velesco, the university’s official representative in the DKU Consortium, and master’s student Anelya Smailova.

During the workshop, representatives from the partner universities discussed the further development of existing dual-degree programs as well as prospects for future collaboration in academic studies, teaching, and research. The focus was particularly on the internationalization of academic programs, the promotion of student mobility, and joint research activities. Mittweida University of Applied Sciences has enjoyed a successful partnership with the German-Kazakh University for more than 25 years. The joint dual-degree programs are an important component of this collaboration. An agreement has been in place for many years for the Bachelor’s program in Business Administration, which is successfully completed by two to three graduates each year. For the past three years, a dual-degree program in the Master’s program in Industrial Management has also complemented the joint academic offerings. The number of participants is steadily increasing. For the coming year, the first students are also expected to enroll in the new dual degree program in Industrial Engineering (Bachelor’s). In addition to the dual degree programs, Mittweida University of Applied Sciences is also actively involved in the so-called “Flying Faculty” initiative. Professors from HSMW regularly travel to DKU in Almaty to conduct courses there as compact block modules. These activities are funded by a project of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). At the same time, students at HSMW have the opportunity to apply to participate in these international courses and complete a module worth five ECTS credits within two weeks. The credits earned are then fully recognized by Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. This year’s consortium meeting made an important contribution to further strengthening the long-standing partnership between Mittweida University of Applied Sciences and the German-Kazakh University. The agreed-upon measures lay the foundation for the further expansion of joint degree programs and the deepening of academic cooperation between the participating universities.
