Working during studies
Working as student during studies
Students from the states of the European Union or the European Economic Space are allowed to work as much as they are able during studies, same as for German students. But note, that they should work not more as 20 hours per week during the semester. Otherwise they have to pay monthly a fee to the German Retirement Insurance.
International students with a permit of stay based on § 16 AufenthG are allowed to work 120 full days or 240 half days per calendar year. Additionally they are allowed to work as student assistant in the university or the Studentenwerk without a limit of working hours. To work more students need permission from the Foreigner´s Registration Office.
Working time during the mandatory internship in your study programme is not counted here.
For students at the "Studienkolleg" it is not allowed to work during the semester, only during the semester breaks.
